Soft, Clean and Bright! =)

A regular client of ours, we were beyond the moon to get a chance to meet the youngest member so early on ! We knew this session was going to be great with such a photogenic family but it couldn't have gone any smoother. Big sister has a smile that lights up the room and with mom, dad and grandma in the room guiding her to bring out the real smiles, it was definitely one of our best sibling combos. And of course baby brother couldn't be overshadowed and was on his best behavior, giving us the best of naps to get through many great poses. The neutral and classic colour palette mom requested was a perfect compliment to this already perfect session.

Newborn Posing Beds

As i find time and start to get creative with our newborn sessions . I started toying with the idea of building our own newborn props.  If you didn't know,  a lot of our props are made by us. One of the things I've started getting into is building newborn beds for our babies and milestone sessions.
This is the third one that I've completed and i'm kinda toying with the idea of a 4th. Its addicting.
This one has taken me months to do;  from the process of buying materials, finding individual parts to assemble, build and put together.  Chipping at it and leaving it sitting dormant for days, weeks, months and then getting  back at it, when i had time.
Its definitely a labour of love and this was dreamt up, when i was working on the 2nd bed.     Did i mentioned its a bit addicting.  =)
Believe it or not, its quite therapeutic.
I knew that with the newborn photography , i would be slowly be building a collection of camera gear,  but i didn't know i would be collecting hand-tools,  power-tools, widgets and things.
I never would have thought home depot would be my 2nd home.   I go there on a daily basis;  An employee came up to me and said that he's gonna hand me an apron one day.
Pointing to his Orange Apron uniform.   We both laughed.   He told me,  a lot of husbands come here to avoid the wife and kids,   "whats your excuse?"    i'm seriously here for work,  honest! =)

PACIFIERS/SOOTHERS!

Definitely one of our staple needs during our newborn session! We always ask parents to bring one to the session to help calm baby and send them off to dreamland. This is especially important during any of the more difficult poses as their little necks just don't have the support and staying asleep will ensure we get through the pose safely.

Of course we can understand a new parents' hesitation in using one. But they don't get addicted after a one time use for 2-3 hours so the choice is still theirs if they want to have the paci as part of their newborn life.

A lot of parents also tell us their babies don't take take it. One of the tricks we have up our sleeve is to stroke the pacifier against the roof of their mouths which will stimulate their sucking reflexes (same idea as in breast feeding).

This one is our go-to brand - in the newborn size of course (we stock brand new ones in the studio in case they're forgotten). The Philips Avent Soothie Pacifier.

We love this one as it's easy to hold, easy to clean and you can stick your baby finger underneath it to help direct the paci into baby's mouth and start that sucking!

Using the soother as part of your newborn's everyday routine is a very personal choice and we don't think there's really any right or wrong.  For us personally, we chose to introduce it for all 3 of our kids.  And each experience was slightly different.

Ellie our oldest, loved the pacifier and was honestly a lifesaver for us - it got her to sleep so many nights and naps (which was the only time we let her use it - for sleeping).  She eventually dropped the habit on her own at 3 months old when she found her thumb :)

Caleb was completely different, he loved his soother so much too and still kept at it past 3 months.  We knew it had to go though when at 3 months old, mommy was waking up every hour to put that damn thing back in mouth!  We decided enough was enough and cut him cold turkey, he screamed for 4-5 days overnight and then become the perfect sleeper he never was!  He also eventually became a thumb sucker like big sis!

Abel took to the pacifier at about 2 weeks as it was part of the sleep nurturing program we had subscribed too (more on that in a future post!) and like Ellie, dropped it naturally at about 3-4 months when he found his "bummie" (his baby talk attempt at saying "blankie" which has stuck :))  Surprisingly he's the only little Chan who does not suck his thumb although he certainly makes those sucking sounds while holding his bummie.  LOL.
